The Abduction of Europa

portfolio

The Abduction of Europa by Titan in Isabella Steward Gardner Museum, Boston 1560 - Europa was the daughter of Agenor, a Phoenician King. Jupiter fell in love with her, and after turning himself into a white bull, went to a shore where she played with companions. She put a crown on the animal, flattered it, and then sat herself on it. No sooner had she done so the animal carried her off to Crete. The bull became one of the zodiac signs.
